33-year-old man dead after being shot by police in southern Manitoba

Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating after an RCMP officer shot and killed a 33-year-old man in Dominion City.

The shooting happened after Morris RCMP responded to a call for service at a home in the community — about 80 kilometres south of Winnipeg  — Tuesday at 8:30 a.m., police said in a release.

The first officer who arrived at the scene shot the 33-year-old after he exited a garage on the property and started advancing toward them while “carrying a metal object,” RCMP said in the release.

Police said the man didn’t drop the weapon or stop moving toward the officer despite repeatedly being told to.

The 33-year-old was taken to hospital by STARS air ambulance in critical condition, where he died. The officer wasn’t physically injured in the incident, the release said.

The Independent Independent Investigation Unit is investigating. The RCMP Major Crimes Unit is also on the scene.
