Province to spray Winkler area for mosquitoes due to West Nile risk

The Manitoba government says it’s going to start spray for mosquitoes in the Winkler, Man., area. 

In a news release Wednesday afternoon, the province said there are high numbers of mosquitoes and evidence of mosquito infection with West Nile virus. The spraying is set to begin Thursday evening if weather permits. 

The spraying will cover the city of Winkler as well as the communities of Reinfeld, Chortitz and Schanzenfeld, according to the release. 

The province also said the risk of humans being exposed to to West Nile is high in the Southern Health region. However, no locally-acquired cases of the virus have been confirmed in Manitoba, the province said. 

As of July 20, here have been 21 mosquitoes that have been positive for West Nile virus in the Southern Health region, according to data on the province’s website. There has also been one mosquito that tested positive for West Nile virus in the Interlake-Eastern health region. 

The province said the spraying will be done with DeltaGard 20EW, a Health Canada-approved pesticide. 

Wednesday’s news release said the treatment times and area map will be available on the province’s website.
