Driver arrested after 6-year-old boy hit by truck at Winkler, Man., intersection

A 50-year-old man from Plum Coulee, Man., is facing charges after a six-year-old child was hit by a pickup truck at an intersection in Winkler, Man., on Monday afternoon.

Emergency services in Winkler arrived at the scene of the collision shortly after 1 p.m., the Winkler Police Service said in a news release posted on its Facebook page.

A police officer was patrolling the area when they saw a man driving a red Chevrolet Silverado turning east onto Pembina Avenue from southbound Main Street and colliding with a child riding a bicycle.

The driver briefly stopped on the road before “accelerating eastbound in an obvious attempt to leave the scene,” the police service said. He was stopped by officers and arrested.

An officer and an off-duty doctor provided first aid to the boy before paramedics transported him to hospital in stable condition with “undetermined injuries,” police said.

The driver faces a number of charges, including dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm, failure to stop after an accident causing bodily harm, and driving without a driver’s license.

Pembina Avenue between 4th Street and Main Street was closed for a few hours and has since been reopened, police said Monday afternoon.
