Stretch of Portage Avenue closed due to crash in Winnipeg, 1 person sent to hospital

Portage Avenue is fully closed for several blocks in west Winnipeg after a morning crash.

Both directions of Portage are blocked between Cavalier Drive and David Street, with multiple emergency crews at the scene, police said.

One person was rushed to hospital in unstable condition after a pickup truck hit a bus shelter and hydro pole near Portage and Bedson Street, then crossed Bedson and hit the Canadian Tire gas bar just after 7:30 a.m.

Police did not say if the person who was injured was in the pickup or somewhere else in the area.

Another vehicle, a smaller SUV, is also damaged at the scene and surrounded by yellow police tape on Bedson.

A damaged bus shelter can be seen in the background with a group of police officers to the right of the photo.
