1 year later, Winnipeg police still looking for answers in death of man who was wanted by authorities in India

Winnipeg police say after a year, they are still looking for answers in the homicide of a 39-year-old man who was found dead at a northwest Winnipeg home.

They’re asking anyone who knew Sukhdool Singh Gill, including members of the South Asian community, to contact investigators if they were in contact with Gill or have information on his whereabouts before he died, police said in a news release issued Saturday, just over a year since his body was found in an Inkster-area home.

Police were called to a home on Hazelton Drive around 10 a.m. on Sept. 20 last year, where they found Gill dead inside.

Winnipeg police wouldn’t reveal how Gill was killed, but say his death has been deemed a homicide. CBC News spoke to a person in the area at the time who said they heard 11 gunshots on the morning of Sept. 20, right before police discovered the man’s body.

Gill, who went by the alias Sukha Duneke, was allegedly part of the Bambiha gang in India, according to police documents in that country. He was accused of extortion and arranging money for gang members to buy weapons, and his name was linked to murders in India.

Police in India’s Punjab state told CBC News last year that Gill was an Indian citizen who left the country in 2017, allegedly with an illegally obtained passport, and had 18 cases against him in India.

Court records at the time showed the status of nine of the cases as “not arrested” and “under investigation or under trial.” Another five were recorded as acquittals, one case was quashed and there was one conviction.

No arrests have been announced in Gill’s death.

Winnipeg police are asking anyone with information that may help in their investigation to contact the homicide unit at 204-986-6508, or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS) or at winnipegcrimestoppers.org
