Winnipeg emergency crews respond to 5 fires in just under 8 hours
Five fires in buildings in five different areas of the city — in just under eight hours — kept Winnipeg emergency crews busy from Thursday night into Friday morning.
The first call came in just before 7 p.m. at a single-storey warehouse on Edwin Street, south of the Disraeli Freeway.
Crews found smoke and flames coming from the building but quickly brought the fire under control, a news release from the city said.
No one was found inside.
Around 8:15 p.m., crews went to a fire in a single-family bungalow on Dearborn Avenue in the Elmwood area, and once again found smoke and flames, with some extending to a neighbouring house.
Occupants of both houses got out safely before the arrival of firefighters, who brought the fire under control by 8:45 p.m.
The next call came from the West Broadway area just before midnight. A vacant two-storey house was on fire on Westminster Avenue, near Langside Street.
The same home was damaged in two previous fires, in August 2022 and May 2023, the news release said.
The smoke and flames in the blaze Friday were extinguished around 12:45 a.m.
Crews were then called around 1:25 a.m. to a two-storey house on Kinkora Drive in the Charleswood neighbourhood.
An attached garage was engulfed in smoke and flames, with the fire extending to the house.
Firefighters initially attacked the fire from the outside, then went in when it was safe. The fire was declared under control around 2:40 a.m.
Everyone in the house got out safely before crews arrived.
The call for the fifth fire came in just as the Kinkora one was wrapping up, at 2:40 a.m. Flames had engulfed one garage and were extending to another on Polson Avenue, off McGregor Street, in the St. John’s area.
That fire was declared under control at 3 a.m.
The causes of all the fires are under investigation, and no damage estimates are available at this time, the release said.
No injuries were reported in any of the fires.
