As we approach November 8th and November 11th, we honor the sacrifices and service of Canada’s veterans. November 8th marks National Indigenous Veterans Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples in the Canadian Armed Forces. From the World Wars to peacekeeping missions, Indigenous veterans served with immense courage despite facing systemic barriers and discrimination. On November 11th, Remembrance Day, Canadians come together to pay respects to all who have served, ensuring their sacrifices are never forgotten.

While these days are pivotal for remembrance, they also remind us of the ongoing health and well-being challenges many veterans face. Veterans often experience lasting effects from their service, including physical injuries and mental health concerns like PTSD and trauma. Indigenous veterans, in particular, continue to experience compounded challenges, from historical inequities in veteran support to limited culturally specific resources for healing.

The Winnipeg health region remains committed to recognizing the importance of these days while prioritizing support for the health of veterans. Our programs and services aim to provide accessible, compassionate care for  mental and physical health, helping them find pathways to wellness and quality of life.

In addition to conventional treatments, we strive to make mental health care more accessible and include options that address trauma in a culturally respectful way. We collaborate with Indigenous health leaders to support Indigenous veterans, recognizing that holistic and culturally sensitive approaches are essential for healing.

On National Indigenous Veterans Day and Remembrance Day, we remember and honor the bravery of all veterans. The Winnipeg health region remains dedicated to their continued care, recovery, and resilience, paying tribute not only through words but through ongoing action and support.

To all our veterans – thank you. Your sacrifices are remembered, and your well-being is a priority.
