Security company employees accused of payroll fraud after allegedly inflating work hours

A man and a woman have been charged with fraud and mischief to data after allegedly defrauding their employer out of thousands of dollars in falsely submitted work hours.

A private security company contacted police in February after its owner noticed suspicious payroll activity from May 2022 to August 2023, police said in a news release Thursday.

The report triggered a months-long investigation regarding the alleged misappropriation of funds, police said.

Investigators allege the operations manager at the business, who was responsible for payroll administration, and a staffing manager worked together to inflate his work hours.

Police believe the staffing manager submitted false work hours and the payroll was adjusted and processed to match them, leading to a pay overage in excess of $72,000.

The operations manager turned herself in to police on June 25. She has since been charged with fraud over $5,000, theft over $5,000 and mischief to data.

The staffing manager turned himself in on Wednesday and was charged with fraud over $5,000 and mischief to data.

Both have been released with an agreement to appear in court in the future.
