Wind chill values could make it feel like –40 in parts of western Manitoba
Frigid overnight wind chill values throughout western Manitoba could make it feel like –40, according to the national weather agency.
A cold, arctic air mass is moving over eastern Saskatchewan and western Manitoba, and with it temperatures on Tuesday night will drop near –30 C and colder, Environment and Climate Change Canada said.
The cold temperatures, combined with northerly winds of 10 to 15 km/h, are expected to produce extreme wind chill values.
The national weather agency says wind chill values will not be as severe during the day on Wednesday, but they are likely to return on Wednesday night.
The extreme cold warning is in place for the following regions:
- Brandon, Neepawa, Carberry and Treherne.
- Dauphin, Russell, Roblin and Winnipegosis.
- Melita, Boissevain and Turtle Mountain Provincial Park.
- Minnedosa and Riding Mountain National Park.
- Killarney, Pilot mound and Manitou.
- Swan River, Duck Mountain and Porcupine Provincial Forest.
- Virden and Souris.
Extreme cold puts everyone at risk, and Environment Canada recommends dressing warmly and in layers to prevent frostbite, which can develop on exposed skin in minutes.
