On Christmas Day most stores and civic offices will be closed
As this year comes to an end with another one soon here, check out this list of what’s open and what’s closed in Winnipeg for 2024’s seasonal holidays.
City services and transit
All City of Winnipeg civic offices will close at noon on Christmas Eve and be closed all day on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years day.
- There will be no garbage and recycling collection on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day.
- Some Winnipeg libraries will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve. A list can be found on the city’s website. All Winnipeg Public Libraries will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
- All city leisure centres and pools are also closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day. You can find Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve hours for the leisure centres on the city’s website.
- Winnipeg Transit will be operating on a Wednesday schedule on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, and a Thursday schedule on Boxing Day.
- In an effort by The City of Winnipeg and Manitoba Public Insurance, transit will be free after 7 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. Hours will be extended with last bus to leave downtown around 1:30 a.m. — riders can consult Navigo for more details
Malls
All major shopping malls will be closed for Christmas Day.
- CF Polo Park shopping centre will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Boxing Day.
- St. Vital Centre will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Boxing Day.
- Kildonan Place will open at 10 a.m. and close at 4 p.m on Christmas Eve. It opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 8 p.m. on Boxing Day.
- Grant Park Shopping Centre is open 10 p.m. to 4 p.m. Christmas Eve and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Boxing Day.
- Outlet Collection Winnipeg opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve. It’s open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Boxing Day.
Things to do
- The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 31.
- The Manitoba Museum is also closed Dec. 24 and 25. It will open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Boxing Day.
- The Winnipeg Art Gallery-Qaumajuq is closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. It opens on Boxing Day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Most grocery stores will also be closed Christmas Day, while many will also close early on Christmas Eve.
Liquor stores
- All Liquor Marts will be closing at 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve, and will be closed for Christmas Day. Most will reopen from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Boxing Day.
- Shoppers should call private beer vendors and wine stores directly for holiday operating hours.
