Man, 20, charged with 2nd degree murder in assault, death of woman at Winnipeg apartment building
A 20-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of a 52-year-old woman who was found seriously injured after an assault in a Winnipeg apartment building on Sunday.
Officers were called to an apartment building in the 300 block of Assiniboine Avenue, near Navy Way, shortly after 1:15 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Monday.
When police arrived, members of Winnipeg’s Fire Paramedic Service were already providing emergency medical care to a woman in the common area of the apartment building.
She was unconscious and suffering from serious injuries from an apparent assault, police said. She was taken to hospital in critical condition but later died.
The woman has been identified as Lucy Wood, 52. Police said they have notified Wood’s family of her death.
Officers later located and arrested a man inside the apartment building believed to be connected with the woman’s assault.
Jules Desjarlais, a 20-year-old man from Winnipeg, has been charged with second-degree murder, two counts of assault and one count of uttering threats causing death or bodily harm. Police say he was detained in custody.
