2 people who allegedly tortured and killed 10 cats arrested by Winnipeg police

A 40-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman have been arrested in Winnipeg for allegedly torturing and killing 10 cats.

Winnipeg police say the two people posted animal torture content on the dark web, with some of the cats being being bought through social media.

The content was viewed by a citizen and turned in to the provincial veterinarian, who sent the content to police in August 2024, police said at a news conference Friday. The animal torture content was posted online between May and August.

Police said often when people are involved in crimes against animals, that violent behaviour can escalate to people, but currently there is no evidence to suggest intent to harm other humans in this case.

The two Winnipeggers were arrested at a residence in the Lord Roberts neighbourhood and were known to police.

A search found evidence of animal cruelty in the home, police said.

The man and woman are in police custody, charged with the following:

  • Killing or injuring animals.
  • Causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.
  • Failing to provide adequate medical attention for an animal when it is wounded or ill.
  • Inflicting acute suffering, serious injury or harm upon an animal, or extreme anxiety or distress that significantly impairs its health or well-being.

Police believe this case is not related to cats that have been found dead in the Point Douglas area, and are investigating the two cases separately.
