36-year-old Dakota Tipi man dead, 34-year-old arrested after stabbing in The Maples

A 36-year-old Dakota Tipi First Nation man is dead and another man faces a second-degree murder charge after a stabbing in The Maples neighbourhood early Saturday, Winnipeg police say.

Officers responded to a report of a serious assault on Marlow Court, between Sheppard and Fife streets, shortly before 4 a.m. Saturday, police said in a Monday news release. They found Kennedy Maxwell Elk, 36, injured with what appeared to be serious stab wounds.

He was taken to hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead.

Elk was a member of Dakota Tipi First Nation who was living in Winnipeg at the time of his death, police said.

About five hours after officers found Elk, police say they took a 34-year-old man into custody at a hotel in the 2500 block of Portage Avenue, just east of Moray Street.

Ryan Sage Meeches has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with Elk’s death and was detained in custody, police said.

They’re asking anyone with information about Elk’s death, including video surveillance footage, contact investigators at 204-986-6508, or send an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477 (TIPS) or online.
