‘Bitterly cold weather’ prompts extreme warning for parts of northern Manitoba on Friday

Parts of northern Manitoba are under an extreme cold warning on Friday as temperatures are expected to plunge to –35 C, with wind chill values of –48 C, Environment Canada says.

The “bitterly cold weather” is likely to stick around in the Tadoule Lake and Lac Brochet regions through Saturday before “moderating somewhat” on Sunday, according to the warning issued around 4:30 a.m. Friday.

Manitobans should dress in warm layers that can be removed if they get too warm, and an outer layer that’s wind resistant. The weather agency also says people should cover up exposed skin, as frostbite can develop within minutes, especially with wind chill.

Keep an eye out for colour changes to fingers and toes, as well as pain, numbness, a tingling sensation, and swelling, Environment Canada says. Anyone who notices these changes should go indoors and warm up.

People who work outdoors during the warning are also advised to take regular scheduled breaks to warm up.
