Game on at new basketball court at Bridgwater Park

Winnipeg hoopers now have one more space to get buckets in the city.

A new basketball court at Bridgwater Park officially opened Saturday. It’s made from asphalt and acrylic sport court surfacing and also has space to play ball hockey, a news release from the City of Winnipeg said.

The budget for all project costs was $210,000, with most funds coming from the federal Canada Community Building Fund, the City said in its news release Saturday.

Waverley West  councillor Janice Lukes said the project wouldn’t have been possible without collaboration between all levels of government.

“Because of that relationship, what we are seeing is this basketball court,” she said at the opening Saturday. “We have two cricket fields coming and we have a tennis court coming and we have another basketball court coming.”

The unveiling comes as construction of a massive recreation campus nearby is set to begin.

A city report from earlier this year found the South Winnipeg Recreation Campus was more than $20 million over budget.

It will have three gyms, fitness facilities and a running track and construction is expected to start early next year.

Meanwhile, Lukes said she looks forward to seeing the campus open.

“Because of the province and because of the federal government and the city, we’re going to be building this beautiful facility,” she said.
