A 42-year-old man is facing a number of charges after a taxi driver was assaulted, robbed and threatened with a weapon by a passenger in Winnipeg.
The incident happened just before 6 p.m. on Thursday, while the cab driver was taking a passenger to Nassau Street near River Avenue.
The passenger threatened the driver with a weapon, destroyed the taxi camera and stole the driver’s personal property, Winnipeg police said in a news release Saturday.
The assault continued until the driver managed to get out of the cab. Police said the passenger then drove away in the taxi.
The driver did not need medical attention after the assault.
Officers located the taxi near the intersection of River Avenue and Norquay Street.
Police said the man in the driver’s seat displayed signs of impairment. He was in possession of alcohol and refused to provide a breath sample.
He was unco-operative during the arrest, according to police. He also provided a different name and was in possession of someone else’s identification.
Winnipeg police have charged a 42-year-old man with robbery, operation of a conveyance while impaired, failure to comply with demand, identity fraud and uttering threats.
He was detained in custody.
At least one other taxi driver has been assaulted and robbed in the city in the last two weeks.
