Man arrested in sexual assault of girl on Winnipeg playground in June

A 23-year-old man who allegedly sexually assaulted an elementary school-age girl at a playground in Winnipeg’s Dufferin neighbourhood last month has been arrested, police say.

Officers responded to a report of a suspicious man asking to take a picture of a child at a park on King Street near Dufferin Avenue on Monday when they made the connection to the sexual assault on June 1, police said in a news release on Tuesday.

A man who was concerned about the situation on Monday followed the man who was asking to take pictures and gave a description of him to police. The child in the situation on Monday was not harmed, police said.

However, it led officers to believe the incident was related to the previously reported sexual assault at a nearby playground on Flora Avenue.

In that incident, a girl was with another child at the playground when a man approached them and made sexually explicit comments to them, before grabbing the girl and touching her in a sexual manner, police said at the time.

The girl broke free and both children ran home to report the assault to an adult, who contacted police. Neither child needed medical attention.

Police said they found a suspect at a home on Jarvis Avenue near Main Street and arrested him around 6:30 p.m. on Monday.

The man was charged with sexual assault and sexual interference.
