Motorcyclist dies days after being struck in hit-and-run, alleged impaired driver’s charges upgraded

A 30-year-old driver has been charged with impaired driving causing death, after a motorcyclist was fatally struck in a hit-and-run collision two weeks ago.

On July 29, a 24-year-old motorcyclist driver from Winnipeg was riding westbound on Highway 44, roughly one kilometre east of Highway 59.

RCMP said a pickup truck struck the man on the motorcycle from behind.

The motorcyclist was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The man died two days after the crash, RCMP said in a news release Tuesday.

The driver of the pickup truck left the site of the crash, but RCMP officers who responded to the collision obtained information that led them to an address on Henderson Highway, where they found the pickup truck with the driver sleeping at the wheel.

The 30-year-old man was arrested and taken to the RCMP detachment in Selkirk to provide breath samples for analysis. He was charged with impaired driving and failing to stop at an accident.

The man, who was released from police custody, was re-arrested on Aug. 2 and charged with impaired driving causing death. He has since been released from custody again and is due to appear in court in November.
