RCMP officer shot by gun loaded with ball bearings
A 23-year-old man is charged with multiple crimes after a Manitoba RCMP officer was shot with a replica gun loaded with ball bearings.
Officers were called Tuesday afternoon about a disturbance at a home on Fourth Avenue in Gimli, about 80 kilometres north of Winnipeg.
Police were told a man in a back room needed to be removed, a news release from RCMP said Thursday.
When they entered the room, there were two men, and one pointed a black pistol with a laser pointer directly at an officer, the release said.
As police ordered the man to drop it, the two men in the room started scuffling over the gun.
An officer who intervened was shot and hit in the chest.
The officer was not physically injured and got the man under control and arrested him.
A closer examination of the gun determined it was loaded with .43-calibre ball bearings, police said.
The 23-year-old is facing five weapons-related charges, as well as charges of assault on a police officer, resisting or obstructing a peace officer and uttering threats.
No charges have been laid against the other man.
