Semi-trailer flies off overpass onto train cars below, causing derailment, shutting down stretch of Perimeter
A semi-trailer flew off an overpass on Winnipeg’s eastern edge, crashing into a train, derailing several of its cars and leading to the closure of a stretch of the Perimeter Highway during Friday’s afternoon rush hour.
Winnipeg police said the crash happened shortly after 3 p.m., and STARS was deployed to the scene of the crash.
One person was taken in stable condition to Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre, STARS said.
The derailment happened on the Canadian National Railway line that passes near the intersection of the Perimeter and the Trans-Canada highways after the truck left the overpass and struck the train, a CN spokesperson said.
No leaks or fires were reported during the derailment, and no hazardous materials spilled. CN said there are also no further risks to public safety.
The collision prompted the closure of the Perimeter Highway at Fermor Avenue Friday afternoon.
At 5 p.m. release from Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure said the Perimeter Highway at Highway 1 east was closed.
Police are asking drivers to avoid the area “at all cost” so emergency services can access.
