Sioux Valley Dakota Nation man dead after SUV rolled over while fleeing traffic stop on Highway 1

A 55-year-old man is dead and a 37-year-old man was injured after the SUV they were in rear-ended a semi-trailer and rolled over on Highway 1, just west of Brandon, last week.

The older man, from Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, about 50 kilometres west of Brandon, was a passenger in the SUV, which the younger man, from Thunder Bay, Ont., was driving. The vehicle sped through a red light before the accident, RCMP said.

They received a report of a two-vehicle fatal collision in the westbound lane of Highway 1, near Brandon, around 10:30 p.m. on July 25, RCMP said in a news release on Tuesday.

Officers found the SUV upside down, with one person inside and another outside of the vehicle.

Police said a Manitoba enforcement officer had stopped at 18th Street and Highway 1 when they saw the SUV speeding westbound down the highway and through the red light at 18th Street.

The officer tried to stop the SUV, but it sped up and hit the rear of a semi-trailer headed west, before rolling onto its roof.

The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The incident is under investigation.
