Teen boy charged with 2nd-degree murder after death of Easterville girl

A 15-year-old boy has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of a 16-year-old girl in the northern Manitoba community of Easterville, police say.

RCMP were called just after 2 a.m. on Friday to what they described as “an open area” in the community, about 400 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.

They found a girl with obvious injuries who was pronounced dead at the scene.

An RCMP spokesperson told CBC News Friday the area where the girl was found was a field or an undeveloped lot.

The accused, who was arrested Friday, remains in custody and the investigation is ongoing, RCMP said in a Saturday update.

The girl’s death is believed to be the third homicide in Easterville and the adjacent community of Chemawawin Cree Nation since early May.

On May 4, a 32-year-old woman was killed in Easterville and a 35-year-old woman was found with life-threatening injuries. Two girls, ages 13 and 14, were charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder.

On May 13, a 14-year-old girl who was seriously injured was pronounced dead at the Chemawawin nursing station. Kingsley Lachose, 19, was charged with second-degree murder.
