Tornado warning issued for parts of southeastern Manitoba

A tornado warning has been issued for parts of southeastern Manitoba on Monday, in what Canada’s weather agency described as “a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation.”

The warning from Environment Canada was issued for the rural municipality of Reynolds, including Ste. Rita, Hadashville and Rennie, and the rural municipality of Ste. Anne, including Richer.

It advised people to take shelter immediately if threatening weather approaches, if they hear a roaring sound or see a funnel cloud, swirling debris near the ground or flying debris.

Environment Canada also advised people to go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows — like a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet.

It said people should also leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and any other temporary or free-standing shelters and instead move to a strong building if possible.

As a last resort, it said to lie in a low spot and protect the head from flying debris, adding that lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.

Several municipalities in southeastern Manitoba are under severe thunderstorm warnings and watches.
