Environment Canada has issued a tornado warning it says is a “dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation” for parts of southwestern Manitoba near the Saskatchewan border.

The affected areas are the municipalities of Elton (including Forrest), Cornwallis west of Shilo (including Chater), and North Cypress-Langford (including Neepawa and Carberry).

As of 5:11 p.m., meteorologists with Environment Canada were tracking a thunderstorm that had already produced tornadoes northeast of Brandon and was moving southeast at 20 km/h.

Damaging winds, hail ranging in size from nickels to golf balls and locally intense rainfall are also possible, the weather agency said in an alert Wednesday afternoon.

The tornado warning replaces a severe thunderstorm warning for the affected areas.
