An elderly woman is dead after the vehicle she was driving just north of Winnipeg was hit by another vehicle Thursday afternoon, Mounties said.

Police were doing speed enforcement on Highway 8 just after noon when an officer heard a crash behind them at the northbound intersection of Highway 8 and Northumberland Road in the rural municipality of West St. Paul, RCMP said in a news release on Friday.

The officer found two people injured in an SUV — the woman, who was unresponsive, and a man, who was a passenger. Both were 76 and from Winnipeg, RCMP said.

A nurse who was passing the scene stopped to help and emergency medical services were called.

Both people were taken to hospital in Winnipeg, where the woman died. The man is still in stable condition.

Police said their investigation determined their SUV was going west on Northumberland Road and was pulling out from the stop sign to enter Highway 8 when it was hit on the driver’s side by another SUV going north.

That vehicle was driven by a 27-year-old woman from Ste. Agathe, who Mounties said was not physically injured.
