Woman, 26, dead after attempted traffic stop, collision with semi

A 26-year-old Winnipeg woman is dead after the car she was driving hit a semi-truck and trailer following an attempted traffic stop by RCMP on the outskirts of the city.

Winnipeg police were called to the scene of the crash around 4:46 p.m. Wednesday, a news release said. RCMP were already on scene when city police arrived, the release said.

An RCMP officer had turned on their emergency equipment and tried to stop the vehicle. A short time later the vehicle collided with the truck, police said in their release.

The province’s police watchdog, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is also investigating the crash. The unit investigates all serious incidents involving police in Manitoba.

In a separate news release Thursday, the IIU said Mounties observed a Honda Civic going 107 km/h in a 70 km/h zone around 4:40 p.m. Wednesday.

The release said after the RCMP turned on their vehicle’s lights, the car didn’t stop and increased its speed instead.

The Honda Civic continued westbound through the intersection of CentrePort Canada Way and Sturgeon Road before running a red light and colliding with a semi-truck and trailer, according to the release.

A woman was transported to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

IIU investigators were immediately deployed to the scene and a request for a civilian monitor will be made to the Manitoba Police Commission, the release said.

The Winnipeg Police Service’s traffic division’s collision investigation section is also assisting the IIU with the investigation, WPS said in in their news release Thursday.
