Woman, 50, dead after head-on highway crash near Portage la Prairie

A 50-year-old Winnipeg woman is dead after her vehicle was hit head-on by an SUV that veered over the centre line of Highway 16 near Portage la Prairie earlier this week, Manitoba RCMP say.

A Manitoba First Nations Police officer travelling on Highway 16 around 5:40 p.m. Monday came upon the two-vehicle crash near the community of Macdonald, about 20 kilometres northwest of Portage la Prairie.

It’s believed a southbound SUV driven crossed the centre line and hit the 50-year-old woman’s northbound SUV, Manitoba RCMP said in a Wednesday news release.

Visibility may have been a factor in the collision, according to RCMP.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 47-year-old Winnipeg man who was driving the other SUV was taken to a local hospital, and then to Winnipeg, for treatment.

Portage la Prairie RCMP and a forensic collision reconstructionist continue to investigate.
