Elm Bark Beetle Control Program commences

Winnipeg, MB – On Tuesday, September 3, 2019, the City of Winnipeg is commencing the Elm Bark Beetle Control Program, weather permitting. The program is intended to control elm bark beetles, the carriers of Dutch Elm Disease (DED).

The Elm Bark Beetle Control Program will begin in Insect Management Areas 39 (Brooklands, Sargent Park, St. James Industrial), 40 (Kensington, Minto, Polo Park, St. Matthews, West Wolseley), 41 (Armstrong Point, Broadway – Assiniboine, Legislature, Portage & Main, South Portage, The Forks, West Broadway, Wolseley) and 42 (Central Park, Colony, Daniel McIntyre, Portage – Ellice, Spence, West Alexander), weather permitting.

Weekly public service announcements will be issued on Fridays throughout the program indicating which Insect Management Areas will be treated the following week.

Treatment will occur between the hours of 5:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, weather permitting.

Treatment will be conducted using Pyrate 480 EC® (chlorpyrifos), a chemical product, which is sprayed from portable sprayers directly onto the lower 50 centimetres of the tree trunk. This product has been approved for use in Canada by Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency, and will be used in accordance with federally approved label directions by licensed pesticide applicators.

Register for notification
The Insect Control Branch offers an automated telephone and email notification system. Residents who register for this service will receive daily phone or email notifications for elm bark beetle control activities. Winnipeg, MB – Winnipeg’s Fall Curbside Giveaway Weekend will take place on September 7 and 8. This is the perfect time to find a new home for your gently used, unwanted items, or hunt for some new-to-you treasures in your neighbourhood, community, and city.

Tips if you are giving away items

  • Place unwanted household items at the curb on your front street
  • Label each item with a FREE sticker or sign
  • Store items out of sight that you don’t want to give away
  • Remove leftover items from the curb by dusk on Sunday

Examples of giveaway items include:

  • Books, CDs, and DVDs
  • Furniture, electronics, and small appliances
  • Sports equipment and toys
  • Yard and gardening tools and equipment (e.g., lawn mowers, snow blowers, rakes, and shovels)
  • Kitchen gadgets, dishes, cutlery, pots, and pans
  • Unwanted gifts
  • Construction material (e.g., nails, paint, and wood)
  • Clothing

Please do not put out:

  • Items that could be unsafe
  • Items infested with bed bugs (e.g., mattresses, furniture, and bedding)
  • Toilets (with a flush volume of 13 litres or more)

Tips if you are cruising the curbs looking for treasures

  • Take only the items at the curb marked “FREE”
  • Check all items closely to ensure they are safe and in good condition before you put them in your vehicle or bring them into your home
  • Don’t walk or drive on private lawns or gardens
  • Don’t discard any items on private property
  • Obey the traffic laws at all times (e.g., don’t block traffic, park illegally, or block driveways with your vehicle), drive safely, and watch out for children
