Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Boyd Avenue and Charbonneau Crescent

Released: 4:07 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two fires on the morning of June 2, 2021.

Boyd Avenue

At 8:34 a.m., WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey home in the 500 block of Boyd Avenue.

When crews arrived on scene, smoke was coming from the home. Crews launched an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 9:18 a.m.

Crews searched the home and no people were located. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available.

Charbonneau Crescent

At 9:36 a.m., WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a three-storey apartment building in the 0-100 block of Charbonneau Crescent.

When crews arrived on scene, smoke and flames could be seen coming from the building. A second alarm was called, increasing the crews on scene, due to the life safety concerns associated with a building of this size.

Crews launched an offensive attack, but deteriorating conditions required crews to switch to a defensive exterior attack using aerial ladders.

The WFPS drone was deployed for situational awareness and thermal imaging cameras were used to help locate the fire.

Crews were able to safely switch to an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 11:29 a.m.

One person was rescued from the building and paramedics transported one person to hospital in unstable condition. Paramedics assessed two firefighters on scene and no transportation to hospital was required.

The occupants of the building will not be able to return to their suites due to the significant damages the building sustained. Residents are working with building management to arrange alternate accommodations.

WFPS crews rescued four ferrets and two cats from the building. The City of Winnipeg’s Animal Services response team was deployed to the scene to assist with the animals, which have since been transported to the Winnipeg Humane Society for temporary care.

The cause of this fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.
