17-year-old girl arrested after 2 people attacked with machete near Winnipeg high school

A group of teens were fighting near a Winnipeg high school last week when a girl pulled out a machete and struck two others, police allege.

Officers were called around 11 a.m. on Oct. 16 about an assault just off the property of Nelson McIntyre Collegiate on St. Mary’s Road.

School staff intervened and stopped the fight before police arrived, while the attacker had run off.

The two people who were hit — a 15-year-old boy and 18-year-old man — received only minor injuries due to protection from their clothing and backpacks, police said in a news release on Monday. Neither one required medical attention.

A 17-year-old girl was arrested on Sunday. She faces charges of assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon.

The principal of Nelson McIntyre Collegiate sent an email to students’ families on Monday, confirming the attack and that the people involved were students.

“I would like to commend the staff member for their quick response in helping to keep our students, staff, and school community safe,” says the letter from Kimberley Adair-Gagnon.

Support for any students is available through administrators, student services teachers and the division’s clinical services, the letter says.

“Often when this sort of event occurs, students have questions and want to talk about what happened. I am sharing this information so that everyone in our community receives accurate information and understands our response to incidents in our school,” Adair-Gagnon wrote.

“You are encouraged to reach out to the school team if you feel that your child requires additional support in the following days.”
