61-year-old from Melita dead after head-on crash with semi-trailer: Manitoba RCMP

A 61-year-old from Melita is dead after a head-on collision with a semi-trailer in southwestern Manitoba on Monday.

Virden RCMP got a report of a two-vehicle crash just after 8:30 a.m., according to a Tuesday news release.

The crash happened on Highway 83, about three kilometres south of Provincial Road 345, near Melita, approximately 100 kilometres southwest of Brandon.

An investigation determined the 61-year-old’s vehicle was travelling southbound on Highway 83 when it veered over the centre line and crashed head-on with a northbound semi.

The driver of the southbound vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. RCMP said the 61-year-old was from Melita, but did not release any other details about the person.

The driver of the semi-trailer, a 47-year-old man from Meadowbrook Village, a community just north of Brandon, had minor injuries.

RCMP and a forensic collision reconstructionist unit continue to investigate the crash.
