7 arrested after woman left with ‘life-altering’ injuries from being held against her will, assaulted for days

Seven people have been arrested and police are looking for two more suspects, after a woman in a northern Manitoba community was left with what were described as “life-altering” injuries from being held against her will and assaulted for days, RCMP say.

Police were notified about the severely injured 34-year-old woman just before 7 a.m. on Saturday, as she was being taken to the hospital after being found outside in Kinosao Sipi Cree Nation, also known as Norway House Cree Nation.

Police who went to the hospital learned she had been held and assaulted repeatedly for several days, RCMP said earlier this week.

Around 9:20 a.m., officers went to the home where they believed the incident happened. Police found a firearm and drug paraphernalia, but no suspects were there.

They later found and arrested two suspects — ages 31 and 32 — at another home in the community, RCMP said in a news release.

Mounties said since then, five more people have been arrested, ranging in age from 18 to 35. The seven suspects were remanded in custody and charged with a variety of offences, including aggravated assault, forcible confinement and unauthorized possession of firearms.

RCMP said Friday they are still looking for two more people who investigators believe were also involved in the incident. They did not identify the two people they are still looking for.

They said the victim and suspects knew each other and police believe the attack was targeted.

The victim was taken to a hospital in Winnipeg, where she remained as of Friday, police said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Norway House RCMP at 204-359-4955. People can also contact Crime Stoppers anonymously by calling 1-800-222-8477 or submitting a secure tip online at manitobacrimestoppers.com.
