A highway near La Broquerie, Man., was closed for a few hours Sunday after a train collision at a crossing in the southeastern Manitoba town.

A stretch of Highway 302 — from Highway 52 to Highway 210 — reopened late in the afternoon after being closed for a couple of hours Sunday.

The incident happened the same day the Francophone community about 60 km southeast of Winnipeg was celebrating St. Jean Baptiste Day with a parade.

Bob Ticknor said he was on one of the floats when he saw the train coming “fairly fast.”

“All of the sudden the brakes went on, we heard the squeal and you could smell the brakes,” he said.

“It’s really sad that an event like this, that’s a celebration of St. Jean Baptiste, was spoiled by an incident like this.”

Emergency and fire crews were at the scene as of 1:30 p.m. Local fire officials wouldn’t provide more details about the other party involved in the collision, and said RCMP would provide more information.

The RCMP said it would provide more details on the incident on Monday.
