Manitoba RCMP arrest 7, lay 65 charges in child exploitation, human trafficking investigation

Mounties in Manitoba say they will announce dozens of charges Tuesday morning following an investigation into child exploitation and human trafficking.

The RCMP said its internet child exploitation unit executed warrants and laid what it describes as “numerous charges” after the investigation, which appears to have focused on Portage la Prairie, according to a media advisory sent Monday afternoon.

The Mounties said they arrested seven people and laid 65 charges.

The RCMP have called a news conference scheduled at D Division headquarters in Winnipeg for 11 a.m. Insp. Shawn Pike, an investigative services officer with the Mounties’ major crime services, will speak at the news conference.

Also slated to attend are child exploitation investigator Const. Kirandeep Hira, Portage la Prairie investigator Const. Catlin Lang, divisional human trafficking coordinator Staff Sgt. Tara Clelland and Portage la Prairie Mayor Sharilyn Knox.
