A man is dead and another has been charged after an assault early Monday, Winnipeg police say.

Officers responded to a report of an injured man on King Edward Street, between St. Matthews and Wellington avenues, shortly after midnight Monday, police said in a news release Tuesday.

They found an unresponsive man with life-threatening injuries when they arrived. He was taken to hospital in critical condition, but later succumbed to his injuries.

The man was identified as Eugene Rob Ryan Little, police say. His family has been notified.

A man was arrested near where Little was found.

Dion Tyson Jamie Wood, 23, has been charged with manslaughter and was detained in custody.

Investigators say the two men previously knew each other and had been in a verbal dispute before Little was physically assaulted, according to police.
