Muslim youth group distributes meals to Winnipeg’s most vulnerable
In the spirit of giving season, a Muslim youth group made its way through the city’s downtown distributing meals to those in need.
Members of the Winnipeg chapter of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association visited areas along Main Street, including Salvation Army’s Centre of Hope, as well as Portage Place mall on Saturday. It was part of a nationwide initiative to put a key Islamic teaching into practice.
“This is basically to give out (food) to the less fortunate among us in this festive season,” said Abdul Iddris, the local group’s leader. “Regardless of the weather, distributing food to bring smiles to the faces of people.”
Iddris said the group handed out meals to between 100 and 150 people.
“We are taught to give back to society, to serve God and to serve our fellow human beings,” said Iddris.
The youth group said it’s also working toward other community-centred initiatives, like a blood drive.
