Several pets found dead, 1 person critically hurt in Winnipeg house fire

Fire crews found a person trapped inside a burning home in Winnipeg early Monday, rushing them to hospital in critical condition.

Multiple pets were also located as crews searched the house in the 300 block of Alfred Avenue, off Aikins Street, in the city’s North End. Two cats and a dog were found dead, while four kittens were rescued, according to a news release from the City of Winnipeg.

The kittens are now in the care of the city’s animal services agency.

Emergency crews were called to the two-storey house around 3:10 a.m. and saw smoke streaming from it.

After being told someone might be trapped inside, some firefighters entered to search, while others began spraying water on the flames, the news release stated.

Paramedics assessed the person who was pulled from the house and took them to hospital. The City of Winnipeg would not provide any information on the person’s age or sex, citing privacy concerns.

The fire was declared under control by 4 a.m.

Damage estimates are not yet available and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
