RCMP officer shot with replica gun during call

A Manitoba RCMP officer was shot with a replica gun during a recent call in Gimli.

On Tuesday at approximately 4:40 p.m., officers were called to a disturbance at a home on Fourth Avenue.

When they arrived, they were told a 23-year-old man was in one of the back rooms and needed to be removed.

RCMP said officers entered the room and found two men inside, with one of them pointing a black pistol with a laser pointer activated.

“Officers ordered the male holding the firearm to drop the weapon, at which point, a scuffle broke out between the two suspects over the firearm,” RCMP wrote in a news release. “An officer who tried to intervene was fired at by one of the males with the replica firearm, striking him in the chest.”

The officer was not physically injured and got the suspect under control and arrested him at the scene.

An examination of the firearm determined it to be a replica, and it was loaded with .43 calibre ball bearings.

A 23-year-old man from Gimli has been charged with multiple firearms offences, assaulting a police officer with a weapon, and two counts of uttering threats. He was detained in custody.

The investigation continues.
