School holidays to be covered under $10-a-day program for child care: Manitoba government

The Manitoba government is extending $10-a-day costs for daycare, so families are covered on school holidays.

Acting Education and Early Childhood Learning Minister Tracy Schmidt announced Friday the government is ensuring licensed facilities will still only cost $10 on non-school days starting Dec. 8.

“The need for affordable child care doesn’t stop on in-services and holidays,” Schmidt said in a news release.

“By providing true $10-a-day care every day for school-aged children, we’re making Manitoba’s child-care system one of the most affordable in Canada.”

The province said making this change will impact around 73 non-school days per year, starting immediately for the holidays at the end of December and the price will drop from the $20.80 currently in place.

“The holidays are a time to celebrate with your family, but for many parents, the costs can start to add up.”

Schmidt said this change means families will save on average around $140 this holiday season.
