The Winnipeg Police Service arrested a 14-year old who was wanted in Brandon for distributing “intimate images” as well as child pornography.

City police made the arrest Sunday and reported it to Brandon Police Service.

The detainment caught the attention of one leader in child protection.

“It’s very pervasive,” said Signy Arnason, associate executive director of the Canadian Centre for Child Protection.

“We have to do a better job educating kids.”

Arnason said the distribution of sexual-related content amongst teens is a major issue and a common trend in a digital age. She says the organization receives around 10 verified reports per week of sexting incidents — where explicit, intimate messages and images are being exchanged.

“You have to be talking about the issues. You also need schools teaching lessons on healthy relationships, boundaries, all of these important things, the difference between loving behaviour and controlling behavior,” Arnason said.

“Once you share it, you’ve ultimately lost control of it.”

Arnason said charges such as “non-consensual distribution of an intimate image” and child pornography could happen as a result of a sexting incident.

CTV News spoke with both Winnipeg and Brandon Police Services, which did not provide further comment.

The teen was in custody in Winnipeg and appeared in court Monday.
