Winnipeg to release 2025 multi-year budget
Today is budget day for the City of Winnipeg.
On Wednesday, the city will table its preliminary 2025 multi-year budget at a special meeting of the executive policy committee.
CTV News Winnipeg previously reported higher property taxes and money to hire more cops could be coming in the budget.
For weeks, there have been signs coming out of city hall that the mayor could raise property taxes beyond the 3.5 per cent annual increase he promised during his election campaign. The mayor said the city’s population and demand for services are growing; however, the revenue to pay is not keeping up.
A spokesperson for Gillingham said Winnipeg has the lowest municipal property taxes of any major city in the country, and that won’t change.
In terms of cops, Acting Police Chief Art Stannard said the Winnipeg Police Service has a budget ask of 72 more officers to help deal with a growing city and high call volumes.
This is a developing story. More details to come.
