Over 130 dogs seized from home north of Winnipeg, humane society says

The Winnipeg Humane Society says more than 130 dogs were seized from a home outside the city, and the organization is asking for help as it deals with an overwhelming number of animals in its care.

The provincial veterinarian and animal welfare office seized the dogs from a home north of Winnipeg, the humane society said in a news release Tuesday.

The humane society says it’s helping to provide shelter and care to a large number of the seized dogs, but it cannot offer more information or images of the animals while the province’s investigation continues.

The humane society has frozen intakes of animals, because it has more than 600 in care, with nearly 300 in its shelter, the news release says.

The organization is asking for community donations and help with immediate care as it deals with what it calls an “ongoing crisis.”

More information about additional needs, such as potential foster homes, will be provided in the coming days, the news release says.

The humane society is holding a news conference at 11 a.m. CT on Monday to offer more information about the impact of the dogs on its operations.

The seizure comes just months after Animal Services took nearly 70 Maltese dogs from a Winnipeg home and brought them into the care of the humane society last May.
