Man shot by Manitoba RCMP taken to hospital in stable condition

A 23-year-old man was shot by RCMP in a rural Manitoba municipality Wednesday night, after police say he assaulted a woman and attempted to light several cars on fire.

RCMP were called with a report of an assault and disturbance at a residence in the rural municipality of Macdonald, just southwest of Winnipeg, shortly after 9 p.m., a Thursday news release said.

Officers who arrived were confronted by a 23-year-old man armed with what police described as an edged weapon.

A confrontation followed, during which one of the officers shot the 23-year-old.

He was given medical treatment by police and taken to hospital by ambulance in stable condition. He has since been released into police custody where he remains, RCMP said.

No other injuries were reported.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba, which is mandated to look into all serious incidents involving police in the province, has taken over the investigation, RCMP said.
