Portion of St. Mary’s Road receives honourary designation of Paramedic Way

Released: 11:31 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB – Today, representatives from the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service and Manitoba Government & General Employees’ Union, announced the honourary designation of St. Mary’s Road, between St. Anne’s Road and Mager Drive, as Paramedic Way.

“Paramedics have been vital in saving lives in Winnipeg and I am proud to champion the honourary naming of Paramedic Way to ensure their important contributions are highlighted,” said St. Vital Councillor Brian Mayes. “Having the honourary naming in front of the recently restored former St. Vital Fire Hall adds to the significance of this recognition.”

The WFPS currently has 724 licensed paramedics on staff who provide residents with emergency medical services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

“Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Paramedics provide quality medical care for residents and I would like to thank Councillor Brian Mayes for his work in proposing the honourary designation.” said John Lane, Chief of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service. “The honourary naming of a portion of St. Mary’s Road to Paramedic Way will ensure Winnipeg’s paramedics are remembered for their current and past contributions to public safety.”

The former St. Vital Fire Hall was built in 1914 and has been designated as a heritage building. It now houses the St. Vital Museum.

“Paramedics provide a valuable public service and are a vital part of our city and province,” said MGEU President Michelle Gawronsky.  “This recognition is well deserved and highly appreciated.”

Paramedic Way sign toppers were installed today in front of the former St. Vital Firehall on St. Mary’s Road between St. Anne’s Road and Mager Drive. The honourary street designation will be in effect for five years starting today.
