A person cleaning out a garage in Winnipeg’s Transcona neighbourhood came across a little more than old tires and tools.

He discovered what appeared to be a grenade, police said in a news release.

The man, who made the find just after noon on Tuesday, called police, who showed up with a member of the bomb unit.

Canadian Armed Forces ammunition technicians were then brought in and the grenade — determined to be a live explosive — was safely removed.

Police don’t known how the grenade ended up there, but they don’t believe it was stored with criminal intent. The garage belongs to a relative of the man.

Explosive devices are occasionally found in commercial or residential buildings and should always be treated as live, police said in the news release.

People are urged to not touch or move anything that looks like a grenade or other type of explosive, but to call 911 immediately. Leave the area and wait for emergency personnel to arrive.
