Girl sexually assaulted by man at Dufferin-area playground: Winnipeg police

An elementary school-age girl was sexually assaulted by a man at a playground in Winnipeg’s Dufferin neighbourhood on Saturday evening, police say.

Police are looking for the man after the sexual assault at the school playground on Flora Avenue, between McGregor and Salter streets, took place around 5:15 p.m. Saturday, they said in a news release Tuesday.

The girl was with another child at the playground when an unknown man approached them. The man made sexually explicit comments to the children, before grabbing the girl and touching her in a sexual manner, police say.

The girl broke free and both children ran home to report the assault to an adult, who contacted police. Neither child needed medical attention.

The man is described as being in his 20s with dreadlocks, according to police.

Officers notified the school, which will issue notices to parents and caregivers about student awareness and safety planning, police say.

Anyone with information about the man’s identity, or has home surveillance video in the area where it happened, is asked to contact investigators at 204-986-3296 or to leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS or online.
