A 23-year-old man has been charged after allegedly breaking into a Winnipeg home while intoxicated last week, police say.

Police were called about the sound of gunshots on Talbot Avenue, between Stadacona and Watt streets, around 5 p.m. Thursday, according to a Friday news release.

An unidentified man had broken into a couple’s home through a window before wandering around, going through their belongings and trying to hide, police say.

The couple escaped their home and realized the gunshot noises they thought they’d heard was actually the sound of the man breaking into the home, according to police.

Officers and a tactical team went to the home, where the man was still inside. Police say he eventually left the home, after officers made contact with him, and appeared intoxicated when he was taken into custody.

The 23-year-old man has been charged with breaking and entering with intent. Once sober, the man was released on an undertaking.
