A man was shot dead by police in the Manitoba town of Niverville early Wednesday while another man sped off in a stolen vehicle, RCMP say.

The shooting happened around 3 a.m. in the area of Drovers Run, a business strip that runs parallel to Highway 311 through the town, which is about 20 kilometres south of Winnipeg.

A woman told CBC News the police are focused on an area around a Shell gas station at the corner of Drovers Run and Krahn Road.

Another male got away in a stolen vehicle while a female is in custody, RCMP said in a news release. No details were provided on whether they are adults or youth.

There is a large presence of both RCMP and Winnipeg Police Service officers and Drovers Run is expected to be blocked off for much of the day, the release states.

More information will be provided as soon as it is available.
